Trumpet player/composer Julian Beutel is active performing jazz, classical, pop, and experimental music throughout Los Angeles County. Trained in traditional Jazz, Julian’s interests have broadened to find ways of combining elements of improvised music with those of ambient electronic music and contemporary classical music. This is achieved with the help of the HyperTrump, a sensor based MIDI controller he has developed that attaches to the trumpet.
As a composer, Julian scores music for animators, film makers, video game developers, and dancers. His work has been featured at the Gold Coast Film Festival (NY), the Shortstack Film Festival (NY), the CalArts Producers’ Show (LA), as well as in games on the App Store and Google Play.
Julian holds a Master’s of Fine Arts (Jazz Trumpet) from the California Institute of the Arts (2014) and a Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance) from Brandon University (2011). He has studied with trumpet players John Fumo, Joel Brennan, and Alan Ehnes, improvisers Wadada Leo Smith, Vinny Golia, Larry Koonse, David Roitstein, and Michael Cain, and Music Technology with Ajay Kapur, Owen Vallis and Jordan Hochenbaum.
